Son of famed musician and composer Joe Nicolas, who is also professor electric bass and as well is the Director of the Popular Music Department and the Conservatory Jazz Band at the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica (National Music Conservatory of the Dominican Republic). His first influence in music came from one of the Dominican Republic’s finest percussionists, Angel Miro “Catarey” (deceased), who introduced young Otoniel to percussion instruments, specifically the “tambora”. He heavily investigated and studied Dominican percussion, thus being able to dominate the percussive bases of the “merengue” and the “bachata” (tambora, guira, congas and bongos). He then began to listen to a lot of Afro-Cuban music, which he found to be very interesting, thus immersing himself in these rhythms via groups such as: Irakere, Batacumbele, The Fania All Stars, etc. At 15 he was already playing professionally with various groups, and as well still hungry for musical knowledge and on becoming a better musician. He became very interested in learning more about his native Dominican folklore, under the teachings of Eddys Sanchez (El Guru) he did just that. Between 1997 and 2001 he also studied drums and drumming techniques at the National Music Conservatory. Otoniel’s influences in drums and percussion are: Tambora: Angel Miró (Catarey), Richard Brador, Fray Luis, Alexis Paula (Cuchi) Güira: Nathanael,Yapo, Edgarito Timbals: Oreste Vilató, Endel Dueño, Ralph Irizarry, Francisco D..la Cruz (Bolilo), Jose Luis Quintana(Changuito) Congas: Giovanni Hidalgo, Tata Güines, Patato Valdez, Eddy Montalvo, Julito Figueroa, Luis Delgadillo (Rebuka), Richie Flores, Okil Medrano(Fito) Bongos: Anthony Carrillo, José Mangual Jr., Roberto Rohena, Paliondo, Ray Colón Drums: Dave Wekl, Steve Smith, Dennis Chambers, Ignacio Berroa, Jojo Mayer Percussion (complete): Alex Acuña, Airto Moreira Though still young, due to his excellent execution of all percussive instruments, he has played with groups with a wide variety of rhythms, below is a listing by genre: Never at rest, Otoniel is now working on transferring the music codes of Dominican folklore to the drum set. This will enable him to make a unique and exciting contribution to world music, its rhythms and fusions. Salsa: Asdrubar, Sexappeal, Vicki Shell, Anthony Cruz, Giro, Luis Enrique Folklore: Xiomara Fortuna, Drumayor(Eddys Sanchez), Marassa (Magic Megia), Luis Diaz, Roldan Mármol, José Duluc, Irka Mateo, Tony Vicioso, Guarionex Aquino Jazz: Gustavo Rodríguez, Ania Paz Jazz Ensamble, Rafelito Mirabal & Sistema Temperado, PALOTRE, Cocuyo jazz, Licuado, Josean Jacobo y Tumbao, National Conservatory of Music Jazz Band, Nuñez Big Band Rock: Segunda Luna, Machacao, Cerobit, 7mo Invitado, Callao, Desorden Mental Christian: Tes-A-T, Cappitulo 7, Benhur Berroa, Luperon Ramirez, Grupo Jubilo, Banda Cid, Ministerio Shalom, 4x7, Jesús Resucitado Fuson: Familia André Show Bands: Jorge Taveras, Leo Pimentel, Sony Ovalles, Rafelito Mirabal, Dante Cucurullo, Diony Fernandez, Ramon Orlando, Enyi, Felix Antuna(El Abuelo) Individual Singers: Danny Rivera, Maridalia Hernandez, Pavel Nuñez, La Sophie, Ileana Reinoso, Miriam Cruz, Cristal Marie, Adalgisa Pantaleon . His days are spent either studying, teaching (for 10 years now, both percussion and drums), practicing or playing. This amount of time on the instruments has given him not only knowledge, but real time experience as well, in which he has been able to develop a very special technique, whether a drum set or percussion instruments be in his very capable hands.
